Thinking of picture-perfect, sandy beaches with clear blue water surrounded by lush forests?
Lakshadweep, which is India’s exclusive island union territory, is calling all adventure lovers.
However, getting there is not a straightforward process due to the strict permits required to visit and minimal access.
Don’t worry though!
I have written a complete guide, including step-by-step instructions, to help make every part of your trip to Lakshadweep run smoothly, whether you are travelling by yourself or going with family.
Read on further to learn about How to reach Lakshadweep from Bangalore.
Step 1: Get an Entry Permit (This Is the Most Important Step)
The first thing you need to do before booking any flight or accommodation is to apply for an entry permit; this is required by every Indian citizen who visits Lakshadweep (outside visitors must obtain special permission).
There are two ways to apply for an entry permit:
1 Online through the Lakshadweep Administration’s website or via their agents, or
2 Through an authorized travel agent.
When you apply online, you must have your ID proof, travel itinerary (you must state arrival/departure dates) and the address where you will be staying.
Expect your entry permit to be approved within 2 to 5 working days from date of application; therefore, it is best to apply a minimum of five working days prior to leaving.
Pro tip: Make accommodation arrangements with government-approved Resort in Lakshadweep like Praveg Atoll’s Lakshadweep as soon as possible because they process entry permits for you.
Step 2: Travel to Kochi or Agatti (Your Gateway to the mainland)
No airlines currently provide direct flights between Bangalore and the island of Lakshadweep, so your trip will follow two distinct legs; connecting through Kerala (Step 2a) first before flying on to Lakshadweep (Step 2b).
You can fly from Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), located in Bangalore, to Cochin International Airport (COK) in Kochi.
Flights between these airports are plentiful, with many daily options provided by IndiGo, SpiceJet, or Air India.
Fares for this leg of the trip begin at about ₹2,500 per person one way.
Once you arrive in Kochi, travel to Lakshadweep by way of Agatti Airport (AGX), which is the only airstrip on the island.
There are 1 to 2 daily direct flights from Kochi to Agatti on Alliance Air, which has a flight time of approximately 90 minutes.
However, flight availability is very limited; therefore, it is highly recommended that you book your seat(s) well in advance, as they will sell out quickly.
If you're looking for smooth connections, then consider making your journey start in Bangalore and end in Kochi.
Step 3: Travel from Kochi to the Islands (By Sea or By Air)
Take the Quickest Way:
- If going to Agatti, take an Alliance Air flight from Kochi (generally, flights can be cancelled or delayed due to weather).
- This will take you directly to the archipelago.
- Jet to the other islands by taking inter-island flights, use hoppers or take ferries to Kavaratti or Bangaram.
Ship Rides:
- From Willingdon Island, ships travel to Lakshadweep (including oohs and ahhs at Kadmat, Kavaratti, Minicoy & other atolls).
- How would you like to sail the MV Kavaratti, MV Arabian Sea or similar ship, for the best prices, on an available schedule(s) from Lakshadweep Tourism?
- It typically takes 14-20 hours, but you have the option to book cabins (A/C or not) from ₹3,000.
- Relaxation is soothing while you cruise on the ocean and look at the beautiful scenery, but you must book with SPLTI, so that you don't miss out on getting a seat.
Step 4: Travel Within The Islands (Explore the Atolls)
Once on your entry island(s) (e.g., Agatti or Kavaratti), take day trips to other islands by speed boat, ferry, or local hoppers.
The Indian government provides affordable ferries to major islands (costing only ₹100-₹500) and you can rent speed boats (generally costing more than ₹2000), for day trips to other islands.
There are multiple islands covered by your travel permits (but always check with your resort/hotel first to make sure).
Cost and Pricing Summary
Round trip travelling from Bangalore to the Lakshadweep Islands can range anywhere from ₹15000-₹30000+ per person (average costs include ₹5000-₹10000 for flights, ₹6000-₹8000 for ferry transportation, and no cost for permits).
The time of year you travel will affect these costs a lot (travel between October and May is ideal when it comes to weather; otherwise, the monsoons will be affecting travel via ship & plane).
It is wise to carry only the essentials (airline baggage limits 10kg) (there are limited ATM's on the islands, so carry cash); and use the eco-friendly rule of no plastic waste.
There are also travel apps available to assist with travel arrangements like MakeMyTrip for booking air travel, & look to the Lakshadweep official website for current information about travel.
