How to Plan a 2–3 Day Trip to Dholavira

With alluring vistas, a place that is full of ancient history, Dholavira in Kutch, Gujarat, makes for an excellent short trip. You will need to consider transportation from Bhuj, major attractions, and the comfort of your accommodation during these 2-3 days in Dholavira.

How to Reach Dholavira

The easiest way to reach Dholavira is to fly into Bhuj Airport (the nearest airport, approximately 220 km from Dholavira) or take a train to Bhuj station. From there, you can drive the scenic route (approximately 4-5 hours) through the desolate terrain and onto what is referred to as the "Road to Heaven," which is a long, straight highway. Buses travel between Bhuj & Dholavira, but they take longer. Therefore, I recommend that you start early in the morning so you arrive by noon.

Your itinerary for Dholavira should include the following:

Day 1 - Arrival and Tour

If you arrive early enough at the airport, you can begin your visit by searching for and visiting the Dholavira UNESCO site (approx. 1.5 km from where most hotels are located), here you will have an opportunity to spend 3-4 hours in the areas surrounding Dholavira that had been constructed by the Harappan people (Harappa) including the water reserves, museum and the main attraction being the stepped wells that were built over 5000 years ago. After sunset, enjoy the peaceful beauty of the white salt flat area and watch as the sun sets into the desert below.

Day 2: Nature and Fossils

Take a visit to the Dholavira Fossil Park to see 250-million-year-old marine fossils and tour the surrounding area, which includes a sanctuary where flamingos migrate during winter (and other times). Find and shoot picture opportunities in an afternoon in either the White Desert or Road to Heaven. Return to your hotel for an evening cultural performance if available.

Day 3: Leisure and Departure

A morning birdwatching trip or a brief trek before departing in the afternoon after lunch can be a great option. You might consider extending your trip for a total of three full days with a visit to nearby villages to learn more about Kutchi artisans and craft traditions. Remember to pack appropriately with lighter layers for cooler evenings and warmer daytime temperatures, sunscreen, a hat, and hydration. Desert weather is very volatile; it can be very hot during the day (30°C +, or higher) and quite cold at night.
